Frank Lam (Senior Officer, WMA)

“Form follows function.” While architects adhere to this timeless principle, what “function” should artist books follow as an art form? Should their design respond to the artist’s personal expression, organise a digestive experience for readers, or blend both into a unified whole?

This reading workshop, led by Frank Lam from WMA, invites participants to explore these questions by browsing a curated selection of photographic artist books from WMA's reference library. Participants will examine how the design of tangible elements—such as typography and the layout of text and imagery—supports the artist's intent, and how intangible elements—like white space, balance, and content sequencing—facilitate an engaging reading experience. The workshop highlights the critical role of the book’s form in storytelling, enabling participants to interact actively with the content in a non-linear manner and fostering a personal and intimate connection with the visual narratives.
